Call us…Irresponsible. This summer, the Maryland Science Center is
throwing caution to the wind, and throwing things off the roof, during the
Summer of Irresponsible Science.
Featuring experiments big and small, and all off the wall, from the
super soapy sphere of Elephant Toothpaste to “pocket science”
demonstrations—miniature machinations that visitors can fit in the palm
of their hands. Pumped participants will learn experiments they can try at
home and witness some they could never do at home or anywhere else
for that matter. We’ll even break out the toilet paper cannons and water
balloon slingshots to demonstrate how some (con’t page 2)

Metallica, Laser Pink Floyd, Laser
U2 and Laser Vinyl all on the dome
of the Davis Planetarium? Rock on.
Friday and Saturday evenings the
dome turns into a most awesome
laser light meets rock and roll show
with the best classic rock ever.
These special effect extravaganzas,
accompanied and choreographed
to the greatest hits of some of the
great rock bands of all time are at
the Maryland Science Center for
two months only this summer—
then they’re gone. Plus—look for
two extra special Late Night Pink

with both Dark Side of the Moon
and The Wall. We don’t need no
education…we need Double Laser
Floyd. (con’t page 2)

extra propulsion can amplify even the most treasured pranks
and games.
Visitors can join in the fun during hands-on workshops that
emphasize the best parts of doing science—taking things apart
to see how they work, making a huge mess, and much more. Plus,
see the power of the Sun, harnessed in its heat-focused glory, as
we melt common household items like bottles and coins, and then
see what happens when action figures and toys face off against the
power of the beam. And, watch what happens when a column of
soapy methane-infused bubbles meet a match.
Look for Pop Up Science experiments throughout the building, all
day long and keep a sharp eye out for Science Ninjas lurking in the
shadows waiting to pounce on curious visitors with cool experiments
and demonstrations that will make you a part of the action. And
don’t forget to come outside when you hear the air raid siren to
see what happens when everything from watermelons to milk jugs
to giant blobs of Jell-o get dropped from the roof down to the
promenade. The impact is impactful to say the least.
The Summer of Irresponsible Science starts July 1st and runs
through the summer. All activities free with paid admission.
Completely free for members. For more information visit www.
marylandsciencecenter.org and look for videos, factoids and more
on facebook, twitter and youtube.

Irresponsible con’t
We know, it’s barely summer, but the Maryland Science Center’s
Homeschool Programs are so popular that each year attendees
have asked that the individual programs and registrations be open
to attendees earlier. This year, Homeschool Programs, information,
descriptions, and registration will be available beginning July 6th.
As always, the best way to keep up with the latest news about all the
Science Center’s programs, from Summer Camp, to Homeschool,
to Teacher Workshops and more, is to sign up for email on our
homepage. Look for Homeschool information at
www.marylandsciencecenter.org beginning July 6th.
Two shows are available every Friday
and Saturday night in July and August.
Tickets are just $8 per person for these
laser experiences which run about an
hour. Add a second show for just $4
more. Or, pair Laser Rock and IMAX for

enews July 2011
Don’t burst their bubble—bring
your kids to Bubble Days—the
Maryland Science Center’s annual
celebration of all things bubbles
returns on July 23rd and 24th.
For one weekend only the
Science Center is packed with
bubble activities including
performances by world famous
bubble artist Casey Carle and
his Bubblemania show, a chance
to make your own secret bubble
formula in the Bubble Factory,
watch frozen bubbles suspended
in air and see our amazing
portable electric powered bubble
machine! Plus, take part in fun
bubble games like bubble gum
blowing contests.
The highlight of the weekend
celebration are multiple daily
performances by internationally
acclaimed bubble artist Casey
Carle. Casey’s soap bubble show
is truly one of the most amazing
things you will ever see as he
manipulates and transforms
ordinary soap bubbles into huge
bubbles, square bubbles, smoke
bubbles, fire bubbles and what
can only be termed bubble art.
Casey and his bubble skills
have been featured on both
the Discovery Channel and the
Science Channel and he has
lent his expertise to Cirque Du
Soleil for the Beatles inspired
Las Vergas show—Love. He
has performed everywhere from
New York’s Lincoln Center to the
Smithsonian. Quite simply, he is,
the Bubble Master.
The day’s activities begin at Noon
on both Saturday and Sunday
and run through 4:00pm. There
are multiple performances by
Casey Carle each day and most
other activities are continuous.
All activities are free with paid
