The residents of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti expect the World Design Capital year to mainly concentrate on housing conditions, the living environment and services. The expectations were studied in a questionnaire carried out by the Design Capital, with responses from more than 900 residents.
Out of the eight emphasis points, the residents chose the ones most important to them. Improving everyday life through design was seen as the central task of the design capital year. Every third resident also expects events and an increase in awareness about their city.
The Design Capital Programme corresponds with the residents expectations. Almost half of the Programme consists of long-term development projects aimed at creating a better city. For example, the methods of service design are utilised in many projects from libraries to hospitals and the care of the elderly to air travel and from developing the world of work to improving municipal residents\' participation opportunities.
The other half of the Design Capital programme comprises events directed at the residents and tourists as well as encounters in the field of design. In addition, design and the Design Capital are made more visible through different publications.
A study carried out in autumn 2011 is part of a research series initiated by the Design Capital with which awareness of the project and materialisation of its aims are to be studied. These studies will continue to be conducted during 2011 to 2013, in cooperation with Innolink Research Oy and Deloitte.
