South Dakota’s geographic location and diverse terrain offer bird enthusiasts an extraordinary opportunity to observe a wide variety of bird species. South Dakota lies squarely in the middle of the eastern and western avifaunas (bird regions), which allows visitors to view more than 400 species of birds. From east to west, South Dakota is home to 54 state parks and recreation areas, each with unique characteristics that cater to specific species of birds. The Glacial Lakes and Prairies Birding Trail in the northeast region features 38 sites ranging from state parks to Waterfowl Production Areas. Those who visit sites on this trail can expect to see a number of species including woodland songbirds, marsh birds, shorebirds and raptors. Stops on the trail include Oakwood Lakes State Park, Waubay National Wildlife Refuge, Sica Hollow State Park and Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The Southeast South Dakota Birding Trail includes 33 sites throughout the region. Characteristics of this region include woodlands, which are a magnet for dozens of species of warblers, and prairie pothole lakes and wetlands teeming with marsh birds, shore birds and wetland species. Popular sites on this trail include the Outdoor Campus-East, Lake Herman State Park and Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge. Central South Dakota is home to three huge reservoirs created by dams on the Missouri River. The reservoirs comprise the Great Lakes Birding Trail, which includes sites such as Farm Island Recreation Area, Oahe Downstream Recreation Area and West Whitlock Recreation Area. Birders on this trail have the opportunity to view at least 322 bird species, 164 of which are breeding species. The beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota is host to the Mickelson Trail – more than 100 hundred miles of maintained, easily accessible trails that allow birders to view dense and diverse bird populations. The unique opportunities provided by each region of this beautiful state make South Dakota a must-see destination for birders.
