Our attention has been drawn to a recent alert regarding the security situation in Kenya.
Security concerns have lately been raised in Kenya as a result of the conflict situation in some neighbouring countries within the Horn of Africa. These concerns eventually culminated in direct incidents against our country, prompting a security response by the Government of Kenya in a bid to secure its international borders. Since the security operation began inside Somalia, there have been some alerts issued by some foreign countries to intending visitors to Kenya about the risks to the safety of their nationals. The alerts usually talk of “imminent attack”, “credible information”, “last stages of planning” and on occasion, have purportedly been specific about a particular period when an attack would take place (Christmas, New Year, Easter etc). Fortunately, all the specific alerts about particular times have turned out to be false alarms.
We appreciate the role played by the source market governments in issuing alerts to their nationals intending to travel to various destinations but we also wish to point out that it is equally important to exercise this duty in a responsible manner. Sending frequent alerts giving “possible scenarios” is not acting responsibly in our view as this could lead to a situation of creating fear and despondency and eventually achieve the intended objectives of the terrorists - to disrupt the lives and livelihoods of the people of Kenya or for that matter the targeted country.
We do not wish to downplay the fact that there have been threats to national security or that security awareness in Kenya is at an all time high during this period. However, the Kenya tourism industry does continue to maintain high security vigilance and visitors to Kenya in the recent past will attest to the fact that security awareness at touristic locations is much higher than before. The recent incidents attributed to Al Shabaab insurgents have all taken place at locations that are not frequented by international tourists.
