The summer months are the most popular time for people to visit the Mount Rushmore State, but many of South Dakota’s treasures can be enjoyed year-round, with the exception of some observed holidays. South Dakota features 54 state parks and recreation areas, each with its own unique characteristics. Western South Dakota offers five national parks, monuments and memorials all within a day’s journey. Take a scenic drive through 1.5 million acres of Black Hills National Forest, which contains the world-famous granite sculptures Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial. Venture into the depths of the earth at Jewel Cave National Monument, the world’s second longest cave. Continue your underground journey at Wind Cave National Park – America’s first cave designated as a national park. Also located within the majestic Black Hills is the second largest state park in the nation, Custer State Park. For a contrast in terrain, travel a short distance east to Badlands National Park where millions of years of erosion have created an awe-inspiring spectacle. Year-round, South Dakota is a premier destination to experience nature’s beauty.
