Two sites commemorating the internment (maybe substitute “detention”) of Japanese Americans in Arkansas during World War II will be the focus of a special event April 16th in McGehee. That’s when the new World War II Japanese American Internment Museum will be officially opened.
The museum will be unveiled at 1 p.m. with an opening ceremony, which will be followed by a tour of the featured exhibit, “Against Their Will: The Japanese American Experience in World War II Arkansas.” Come 3:30 p.m., there will be second ceremony at the nearby Rohwer Relocation Center National Historic Landmark to debut new outdoor interpretive kiosks.
George Takei, who played Lt. Hikaru Sulu on the original Star Trek television series, will be a special guest at both events. Takei was interned as a young boy with his family at Rohwer. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has also been invited to attend.
If your news outlet would like to cover the event or you would like an interview, please contact Kat Robinson, communications manager at the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism at kat.robinson@arkansas.gov or (501) 682-7606 – or Kim Williams, Arkansas Delta travel writer at the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism at kimberly.j.williams@arkansas.gov or (870) 295-2005.
