Countless monuments of medieval architecture have survived in former Hanseatic cities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the federal state to the north-east of Germany, washed by waters of the Baltic Sea. The capital is the city of Schwerin. The largest German island - Rügen, famous for its chalk cliffs, administratively belongs to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Free cities (Kreisfreie Städte): Greifswald, Neubrandenburg, Rostock, Schwerin, Stralsund, Wismar.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is famous for numerous lakes, the largest of which is the lake Müritz (its area is 117 sq. Km.). There are 270 nature reserves and 3 national parks on the territory of this federal state.
The main contribution in the state’s economy brings agriculture, fisheries, shipbuilding, machine tools, food and woodworking industries. Stralsund, Wismar, Rostock and Greifswald - Hanseatic port cities, with centuries-old tradition of trade with Scandinavian countries.
Countless monuments of medieval architecture have survived in former Hanseatic cities. The Palace – the former residence of Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, the State Art Museum with rich collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings of XVII century and the cathedral deserve special attention in Schwerin. In Neubrandenburg one can see perfectly preserved medieval fortifications.
