Belfast tunes up for week long celebration of music
Belfast is gearing up for another week-long celebration of music as details are announced of the city’s third Belfast Music Week (November 4-11). Building on the momentum generated last year when Belfast’s reputation as a world-class musical city was boosted by the MTV EMAs being held in the city, another packed programme of gigs will be held in every corner of the city, catering for every musical taste.
Belfast Music Week is organised by Belfast City Council and this year is being co-ordinated by the Oh Yeah Music Centre.
Among the highlights are showcases for breakthrough artists, DJ workshops for young people, a talent search, and one-off collaborations by some of our best-known musical talents.
Last year’s Belfast Music Week attracted more than 33,000 people to the city with more than 170 live performances in 45 venues across Belfast. In addition, the MTV EMAs showcased some of Northern Ireland’s finest to a global audience of around 1.2 billion.
Recent figures from Belfast City Council suggest the MTV Europe Music Awards generated £22m for the city. Belfast City Council estimates that £10m was generated in additional tourism revenue by the event, while the £22 million figure was reached by estimating things such as the PR value of media coverage and other hotel sales. One hundred and thirty media organisations covered the awards.
Summer Music Festivals boost Belfast economy
More than 60,000 people turned out at the Boucher Road playing fields to see Foo Fighters and the Stone Roses headline Tennent\'s Vital recently.
The Belsonic festival also drew thousands of fans to the city, with acts including Skrillex, Madness and Thin Lizzy entertaining crowds in Custom House Square.

New mural reflects social history of Sandy Row
A new mural has been unveiled, highlighting the local history of Sandy Row and the surrounding area. The 30-feet long art piece, by Belfast artist Ed Reynolds, runs along a wall in Stroud Street, bordering the adjoining St George`s Gardens.
It includes various images relating to the history of the area, including famous faces such as snooker star Alex Higgins, singer Ruby Murray, footballer Albert Watson, boxer Samuel Hillery and `The Singing Butcher` John Johnson. Other images relate to the likes of workers on the tramway, which once terminated nearby, and the Moyola Arms pub, which previously stood on the site where the new artwork is located. The mural is a companion piece to another mural, on the theme of the Titanic, which was completed on the side of the nearby Allen`s furnishings store on the Donegall Road earlier this year.
The work was commissioned Belfast City Council, who have been working with Sandy Row Community Forum and Sandy Row Residents Association, alongside Ed Reynolds, to create the highly visible art piece. The project was also supported by the Department of Social Development and the NI Housing Executive.
