Wales is the land of beautiful scenery and magnificent medieval castles. Approximately one fifth of the territory of Wales is a National Park. This ancient and unruly land is famous for its picturesque valleys, unique culture and hospitality. You can feel something lyrical and mystical in its air, fascinating legends and traditions. There are hundreds of settlements of the ancient Celts here. Pentre Ifana, Bryn Celli Ddu, Barclodiad y Gawres and the most ancient and famous of them - King’s Arthur Stone at the Gower Peninsula. King’s Arthur spirit is everywhere: in Carleone place of worship where, as they say, the golden castle Camelot used to be, and on the top of Snowdon Mount, where according to a legend, King of the Britons, was buried and there was a lake that swallowed Excalibur sword. This spirit is in the village of Saint-Davids, whose magnificent cathedral opposes to cruel winds walking on the peninsula for hundreds of years. In such places it is easy to believe in existence of wizards, dragons, prophets and messiahs. Even the Offa's Dyke bank, the first significant physical border between Wales and England, enveloped in an aura of magic.
In Wales the are more ancient castles per square mile than anywhere else in the world. But there is nothing magical in these massive fortresses of the XIII th century. Built as a bastions of resistance to British regime, they represent the strength of nation over seven centuries. Four of them - Conwy, Kernarfon, Harlech and Byumaris - are unique and listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
