Salamis is the largest Greek island in the Saronic Gulf of the Aegean Sea, located about 16 kilometers to the west of Athens. Island’s area - 95 sq. km., a length of coastline - 104 km. The landscape is mountainous, the southern part is covered with pine forests. Faneromeni forest is very good for walking, Kanakion forest is a great place for mountain biking. Local population is engaged in agriculture, working in shipyards and in fisheries. Salamis is famous as the venue of one of the most significant battles of Ancient World – at the 28 (or 27) th of September, 480 BC, during the Greco-Persian war, the Greek fleet led by Themistocles defeated the Persian fleet. Today it is home to Salamis Naval Base, headquarters of the Greek fleet. The island was also a birthplace of legendary Ajax - the hero of the Trojan War.
Salamis is a very popular holiday destination of the Athenians. There are beautiful sandy beaches, rocky shores, rich vegetation and well developed tourist infrastructure – a lot of hotels, cafes, bars and shops.
