The capital of Macedonia province - the city of Thessaloniki, is the second largest city of Greece. Founded in 315 BC, it received the name after the sister of Alexander the Great.
This major cultural and shopping center embodied power and glory of the Macedonian dynasty. Apostle Paul, one of the four authors of the Gospel, preached here and the Christian patron of the city is St. Demetrios, who accepted a martyrdom death here.
The city is situated on the shores of the Thermaikos Gulf. Stifling bustle streets are fanned by fresh breeze of the sea. Life in the second largest city of Greece is full of swing in all seasons. Smart Tzimiskes boulevard is known for its fashionable shops. In Thessaloniki, worth visiting the upper town and the ramparts, where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the city, the White Tower, built in the XV th century to repulse attacks of enemies from the sea, the Triumphal Arch of the Roman emperor Galerius with magnificent bas-reliefs on the theme of his victories, the church of St Demetrios of Thessaloniki - the biggest in the entire Greece, the Rotunda with famous mosaic floors and, of course, the monument to Alexander the Great.
